Title of Workshop: “Flour Dust Explosion”
Participants: 30 F.4 students
Objective: (i) Hands-on construction, in 10 groups, of “Flour Dust Explosion” kit using “Milo” can
(ii) Knowledge of dependence of reaction rate on surface area (DSE Syllabus Topic IX Rate of Reaction)
(iii) Knowledge of small-scale explosion can be safe (ref: “pop sound test” of hydrogen)
(iv) Carry out the “Flour Dust Explosion” experiment using the finished kit
(v) Search for the devastating 2015 New Taipei Water Park Explosion

Title of Workshop: “Micro-scale Organic Preparation”
Participants: 30 F.5 students, 10 groups
Objective: (i) Using a “cold stick”, a “distillation cap” and a mini-heater to perform organic reactions
(ii) Preparation of ethyl methanoate from ethanol and methanoic acid (DSE Syllabus Topic XI Chemistry of Carbon Compounds)
(iii) Preparation of 2-chloro-2-methylpropane from 2-methylpropan-2-ol (DSE Syllabus Topic XI Chemistry of Carbon Compounds)
(iv) Advantages and disadvantages of using micro-scale apparatus in organic preparations
